Upper Trishuli-1 Hydroelectric Project is a run-of-river scheme in Trishuli River with 216 MW install capacity. The intake is at about 250m downstream of the confluence of Goshainkunda Trishuli River and Bhotekoshi River near Dhunche the Headquarter of Rasuwa District in Nepal while the underground Powerhouse lies at about 500m upstream of Mailung River confluence with Trishuli River. The design discharge of this Project is 76 cumec and the gross head is 340.89m ~ 342.86m. The catchment area at intake is 4,350.88 km2 and the operation water level is 1255.00m. The annual generation potential is 1501.4 GWh. The diversion weir has three radial gates 11m wide and 16.5m height each with submerged roller bucket spillway and intake with two roller gates 5.5m width and 8.0m height each. The water taken in intake is conveyed to the underground desander through a 297m long circular Intake Tunnel with 6.5m diameter. Three parallel desanders of 10m width, 24.13m height and 115.0m length each having two bays settles & removes sediments in the water.
A 9,716m long circular headrace tunnel with 6.5m diameter conveys the water from desander to vertical shaft. The 292.122m deep vertical shaft is connected to 40m long horizontal pressure tunnel which will follow the 110.70m long penstock tunnel to reach the underground powerhouse. The powerhouse cavern has 83.0m length, 18.7m width and 43.9m height. Three draft tube tunnels of 27.95m length each connect the Powerhouse with the Draft tube gate shaft which is 9.0m wide. The 238.oom long 6.5m diameter circular Tailrace Tunnel discharges the water back to Trishuli River. The electricity generated will be evacuated to Upper Trishuli-3B hub by a 10 km long 220 kV transmission line connecting the national grid.
